Biodata Lorena Pérez

Lorena Pérez Hernández, PhD, works as a permanent lecturer at the University of La Rioja (Spain) since 2001. She teaches graduate courses on Semantics & Pragmatics, Scientific, Technical, and Legal English, as well as a PhD course on pragmatic and discourse aspects of textual interpretation. She is also the current editor of RESLA (Spanish Journal of Applied Linguistics) and a member of the Editorial Boards of ARCL (Annual Review of Cognitive Linguistics; edited by John Benjamins) and JES (Journal of English Studies).

Lorena Pérez Hernández graduated in English Studies, with a specialization in linguistics, at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) in 1995, having spent the last year of her degree as an Erasmus student at the University of Salford (Manchester, UK). In September 1995, she started her doctoral studies at the University of La Rioja and completed her Ph.D. degree in linguistics, in 1999. In 1996 and 1997 she was a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley.

Initially, Lorena Pérez Hernández carried out research on pragmatics (illocution and politeness) from a functional-cognitive perspective. Her Ph.D dissertation, entitled A Cognitive Analysis of Directive and Commissive Speech Acts in English, included a thorough description of the propositional cognitive models which motivate the syntactic realizations of basic categories of directive and commissive speech acts in English.
Her present research interests include aspects of cognitive and functional semantics. She has looked into issues of grammatical metaphor and metonymy from a cross-linguistic perspective. Simultaneously, she has also investigated the metaphorical grounding of modals in Spanish, French, English and Italian.

Other interests include internet-related technology (websites and blogs design, audio and multimedia applications, online educational resources, the development of online educational materials, etc.).
